Working on Shield includes opportunities to write, learn page design, take photos, record podcasts, record and edit videos, run social media, etc. We cover campus activities and local news, review films and concerts, and cover RU and local sports, and much more.

Students from all majors are welcome to participate, even if they don't have any background in yearbook, newspapers or other media work. That’s what Shield is for!

We also have scholarship money available for students who serve as editors starting next year, and editors are always chosen from those who work with Shield during a prior semester. Editor positions include roles such as sports editor, news and opinions editor, features editor, social media manager, photography manager, creative director, etc.

Basically, students can work for Shield in two different ways. You can register for MCM1101 Shield Media Workshop, which would apply to your electives if you are not a mass comm major, or you can serve as a volunteer.

We meet on Tuesdays from 3:45-5 in Auditorium East. Our first meeting on Jan. 12 will be held via Zoom. We will also be having students join class via Zoom throughout the semester too. We can be flexible around sports schedules. We are quite experienced with that!

Most students who get involved with Shield find that they:

  • enjoy the writing, creativity, photography, podcasting, videography, etc., and

  • enjoy being a part of the Shield team. Alumni name it as one of their favorite aspects of their time at RU. It's a great way to get connected to other students, to alumni, etc.

Send an email to Lora Hutson, Shield adviser, Tell her how you'd like to participate and she'll get you connected to our team.
