The Rochester University men’s basketball team won its season opener over Indiana University East 73-62 at the Garth Pleasant Arena on Oct. 30.
Virgil Walker, an All-American transfer from Reinhardt University in Georgia, led the Warriors to victory. Walker put up a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds in his debut for the Warriors.
The Warriors and Red Wolves traded leads for the majority of the first half. The Red Wolves were able to tie the game at 29 with 4:54 to play courtesy of a Jaylen McKay layup. However, this tie wouldn’t last long as Walker and Andre Johnson rallied their team to pull ahead by 15 points before the break.
Opening the second half, Andrew Kline and Andre Johnson scored a pair of layups to extend the Warriors run 21-3. For the remainder of the game, the Warriors would lead. The Red Wolves could not overcome the second-half deficit and would only pull within 9 points before losing by 11.
The Warriors will travel to Indiana Wesleyan to face Lincoln College in the Indiana Wesleyan Classic on Nov. 6. The Lynx come into this matchup 0-1 after falling to IU Kokomo in overtime.
